DAY 6 – MONDAY 10TH DECEMBER, 2018

We have been finding that it is very easy to sleep in over here as the sun does not even rise until after 8.30am and it is almost 9am before it is light enough to want to venture out…  Today is quite cold with temperatures down to 5 degrees.

It was time for us to do some washing this morning, so before we ventured out, we did a little housework, and vacuumed out and them put on a couple of loads of washing…

Steve spent most of the morning trying to work out the transport apps on his phone and mapping out which public transport we would need to catch to take us into Nyhavn which was our destination for today.  It was the first place we took off to explore when we were here in 2016.

The app worked slightly differently this time to when we were last here and we did get a little lost when we got to Norreport Station and had to transfer to the Metro.  We ended up going the wrong way and ended up on train platforms.  We had been trying to avoid stairs where possible because of my sore knee, but ended up going up and down flights of stairs everywhere trying to get out of the station and back to the Metro.  Certainly getting my steps up today

Finely we found the Metro, we only had to catch it for one stop to arrive at

Nyhavn.  When we hopped out of the train, we ended up in this massive department store.
Inside Magasin Du Nord
It was one of the oldest in Copenhagen.   Magasin Du Nord, and it had a bit sign on the front suggesting it was 150 Years. Everything in Copenhagen is lit up for Christmas, and being in the colder climate, the lights are on a lot longer each day really making it like a wonderland…
We had a little walk to get to Nyhavn and as we were crossing the street we got caught up in a big protest march.  We figured it had something to do with refugee status as they were calling for human treatment of refugees, but we really had no ideas what it was really all about as we could not understand a word they were saying….  We told a couple of people we could not speak Danish, and they asked us if we were tourists and we said yes, so they told us to have a good day.
Nyhavn in Winter is terribly different to what it is in Summer.  There were no where near the same amount of tourists about.  The harbour was not a thrive of activity.  In face we didn’t even see the harbour cruise boats around.  We had thought of doing a harbour cruise again, but decided against it as it was so so cold down there.

The gulls here are enormous

Instead we decided to go for a walk along past all the eateries and check out all the Christmas market stalls along the water’s edge.  We walked down as far as the ice cream shop we had stopped at last time, and this time, the place was empty, not a person sitting outside, no one eating ice cream,  it was so deserted.

The ice cream shoppe we enjoyed visiting last time we were here.
It was freezing down by the water front

We walked across the little bridge with all the locks and I swear there are way more locks there now than when we were last here.  It was pretty much deserted this time of year....
One of the things I enjoyed was seeing all the little outdoor restaurants, all decorated for Christmas with blankets over each chair for the comfort of their patrons.  For us it was still to cold to sit outside.
After walking around Nyhavn and taking our fair share of photos we headed back into town through another lot of Christmas markets.  I am very much looking forward to visiting them at night later in the week when they will all be lit up.
Before leaving Nyhavn,  I wanted to get some photos of the buildings, but the best spot to do that was on the after side of the water.  Whilst Steve took off to do that for me I sat and listened to this flute player.  He was really very good...
This guys was really very good...
Meanwhile I am trying to keep warm..  It was freezing once you stopped
The building were all beautiful decorated with fairy lights and real pine branches around each of the door ways and windows.  Lots of photo opportunities for Christmas photos around this area…..
Chocolates - in the shape of roses, spanners and all sorts of other things
Cross stitch Christmas baubles
There were reindeer pulling sleighs,  just loving the whole experience.

It was so cold though, that Steve found a place to order us a nice hot chocolate drink.  It was different to what we have at home, being made on real chocolate.  It tasted so good and warmed us up somewhat…
Across the road we noticed a hotel with a beautiful Christmas tin soldier standing  out the front of it, so of course we headed across to take a photo.  There was a bell boy (well man actually) standing at the front door letting people in and out of the hotel.  At the entrance to the hotel where coned trees decotated with Christmas canes.  We took more photos of course…
By now we were feeling a little hungry and very cold, so decided to walk a block or so down the road where we found a McDonald's.  We are not McDonald fans, but the warmth of the building was a big draw card as to where we were going to have our lunch….

It was really well past lunch time as it was after 3pm, but the cold had made us hungry, so we enjoyed a chicken and bacon burger with fries. ( totally different to what we have back home)  They also had some sort of seasoning on them.

trying to navigate our way home whilst riding the bus...
By the time we left McDonald's, the sun was setting and we were able to see the beautiful orange colours of the sun setting in the evening sky.

It was around 4pm when we boarded our bus for home, and the lights of the city were all on.  Such a pretty site.  By the time we got back to Pete and Maria’s it was dark.  It felt weird getting home at 4.30pm and it was night time, with lights on everywhere.  Still trying to get used to these short days.
At least it was an easy dinner tonight as we just had the left over curry from the previous evening…
We are still finding that by 8 or 9pm we are feeling really tired and wanting to head to bed.  Not sure if it is still jet lag or whether it has to do with the fact that it has already been dark for several hours and it feels a lot later than it actually is.
