BOOKWEEK 2021..
I thought my Bookweek dress ups were over when I retired last year. I had spent the previous 13 years working in a Library, which meant that Bookweek and dressing up was a very big part of my working life. Having to come up with costumes each year took planning and thought and I thought those days were over for me...
Come 2021, and I get a desperate call from my daughter to come to her rescue. She needed me in Brisbane to help with her children whilst she was on her teaching prac. It also happened to be Bookweek so they all needed costumes for a Bookweek parade. Sarah and Willow's costumes were easy, Willow wanted to go as Hermione from Harry Potter, and Sarah was going as the Wood hunter from Little Red Riding Hood, but Maxie decided he wanted to go to school as a Pokemon character Dalibird.... Well Dalibird is not a common character and we had trouble finding a costume ideal. We searched Pinterest and the internet and there was nothing so we had to come up with a costume ourselves.
Well we managed to do it and Max was incredibly excited about his costume. This really surprised me because as a little boy he hated dress ups and we could never get him to dress up in a costume...
Today he was super excited about getting dressed up for bookweek and was up with the crows to get dressed into his costume... He was super proud to wear it to school. He particularly loved his little tail and wanted to wear it all day. I had velcroed it onto his T Shirt so that he could take it off. As far as Max was concerned it wasn't going to happen...
Our very own Hermione |
Sarah had to come up with a costume this year also, as she is on Prac. Her Prac teacher was going as the big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, and the other Prac student dressed as Little Red Riding Hood. Sarah needed to come up with something that went along with the story also. She really didn't want to spent a lot of money on a costume either.
Steve and I spent almost two days driving around Brisbane looking for a toy axe for her costume. She had sourced one online at Toyworld for $8. We visited a couple of Toyworlds and none of them had them in stock. In the end, we just spent three times that amount and bought a toy chainsaw. We were over driving from one end of town to the other...
We picked up the Flannel shirt on sale at KMart for $2, the beanie for $2.50 from a cheap shop and a set of braces for $10. The bead we made from left over fabric that Sarah had lying around the house at home here from a previous dress up.. She looked great in the end... In fact she really looked like a guy and the kids did not even recognise her...

Sarah sent me a photo of the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood at her Prac school. They all looked great...
Willow's closest friends at school also went along dressed as Hermione from Harry Potter. They had been planning this for quite some time. Discussing the different parts of their costume.
Max wanted a photo taken with one of his little mates also...
Steve has never been to a bookweek parade before, so this was a new experience for him. As neither Sarah or Colin could be at school for the parade, we were able to go instead. Their school goes way out on their costumes. Will post some of them in the next post...
The kids had a great day though and all the stressing earlier in the week trying to put a costume was worth it, when you saw how happy and excited they were going off to school.
