MAKING MAX'S BIRTHDAY CAKE....

When Sarah first started making her children birthday cakes, they would pick them out of the Woman's Weekly Birthday cake book.  She could cope with that because it always had clear instructions on how to make them.  These past few years the kids have moved past the book and have requested cakes that she has to design and come up with the ideas herself.

Max wanted a Pokemon Cake for his 6th Birthday and was very specific about what creatures he wanted on his cake.  He was also very specific about the fact that Sarah couldn't use any of his Pokemon figurines because he wanted to be able to eat the ones that decorated the cake...

He was also pretty keen to help her with the making of it all...

She did enlist his help in rolling the icing and working the colour through the icing but he seen tired of that and she was then left in peace.

Sarah had four Pokemons to make and it literally took her all day to do it.  She can understand why people charge so much for kids fancy birthday cakes...

Her first attempt at making the Pokemons was making Pikachu.  She wasn't overly happy with him, but I think she did an excellent job...

He was a little rough around the edges but she got better and better with each new one she made...

Her second attempt was making Charmander.  The difficulty she had with this one was trying to get the colour right.  Honestly it probably wouldn't have mattered as Max was just excited that she was making them for his cake...

She really went to a lot of trouble with all the detail including the little claws on his feet...

Even though it was time consuming, she really did enjoy making them.  She said it reminded her of her childhood where she would sit and play with play dough for hours...

Her third attempt at a Pokemon Character was Bulbasaur, and I really think she excelled her self with this one.  He looked awesome.

Max begged her to make one more so she had a go at making Squirtle and I think he was the cutest.  Max was super excited and super impressed.  I think he loved his cake as much as his presents.

This has all been a steep learning curve for Sarah.  She made these characters just from fondant but found they didn't harden up enough.  She had the fan blowing on them to firm them up a little but as she read more she has discover that if she makes them out of Gum Paste they will naturally harden.  A good tip to remember for next time.

I must admit the finished cake looked absoultely amazing and Sarah can be very proud of the job that she has done...

We have one very excited little boy waiting for his birthday tomorrow..
