The
last day of 2018 and what a great year it has been. So many things to be thankful for. The year that our latest grandchild was born
and what a way to end the year spending the past three weeks with Pete and
Maria and getting to know Theodore…
Pete
was cooking dinner for us this evening for New Year’s Eve. He was cooking a roast of wild boar, roasted
vegetables and his amazing potatoes and gravy.
I spent most of the afternoon in the kitchen with him, just chatting and
peeling the vegetables and cutting them up.
It really was a nice way to end the year…

Listening to the Queen's speech New Year's Eve |

Listening to the Danish Queen give her speech |
Maria
decorated the apartment for New Year’s Eve with streamers, candles, and
balloons and we prepared a plate of nibbles to be eaten whilst we watched the
Queen’s message. It seems all Denmark
stops to listen to the Queen’s message. Where in Australia, Queen Elizabeth delivers
the Queen’s address on Christmas Day, in Denmark, Queen Marguerite delivers a
New Year Address every year on December 31st at 6pm. Normally the address is broadcast live on TV
and radio from the Queen’s office in Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg. This year it was delivered from Fredensborg
Palace as a result of renovations at Amalienborg Palace Square.

Once
we had watched her address, it was time for dinner… Pete had excelled himself,
the meal was delicious. It was terribly
noisy whilst we ate dinner with fireworks going off everywhere around the
neighbourhood, so once we had finished our main meal, we decided to go around
to Banana Park and let off some of our fireworks early so that Max could enjoy
them before his bed time. There were
lots of families there letting off their fireworks. Once we had let off a few of them we headed
back to the apartment to have desert.

The boys stash of fireworks for New Year's Eve |

Rune
and Heidi had supplied desert for us this evening in the form of beautiful creme
brulee, all in little glass dishes. I
was sure they had made it from scratch, but they informed us that the bakery
down from where they live make them in these little bowls… They were delicious…
sensational in fact…
After
we had finished our desert, it was time for some board games. Once again, we had a game of “Exploding
Kittens”. This is such a great game… I
am so pleased we were able to get a copy to bring home with us. After playing this, we had a game of “Bohanza”
the new game that Steve had got for Christmas.
This was great too. We were all
bean farmers, it is a game where we all need to work together and help each
other, otherwise it could get pretty heated.
It was almost midnight by the time we finished playing this game, and
the fireworks were getting louder and louder as everyone around the
neighbourhood was letting them off everywhere.
They were even lighting them in the streets near cars which freaked me
out a bit…

We
watched the count down to the new year on TV and then Steve and Maria jumped

New Year's Eve in Copenhagen. |
Once
the New Year was counted in, we headed back to Banana Park to let the rest of
our fireworks off. It was unreal, it
didn’t matter in which direction you looked, the sky was alive with colour and
explosions… These fireworks were going off till after 1am in the morning…

Our Kransekage (New Year's Eve cake) |
After
our fireworks were all set off, we headed back to the apartment for coffee and
the traditional New Year’s Eve Cake - the Kransekage. At this point, Rune, Heidi decided it was
time to head home, as young Max still wasn’t asleep. For the rest of us, we were still very full
from our amazing meal earlier in the evening, so it was just a small taste of
the Kransekage and then we were eager to head to bed.
